Quick Tip – How to remove roles in Final Cut Pro X

I was recently playing around with roles in Final Cut Pro X (roles were introduced in the 10.0.1 update to FCPX). However after having added some roles to a project i decided that acutally i’d named those roles wrong and didn’t want to use them.

This is where the problem began i went to delete them in the role editor window.  I’m not sure if this is a bug or if it’s intended to work this way, but basically i couldn’t delete them and wondered why, it turns out that you have to do the following to delete roles.

  1. Remove the role from any clip on a timeline (FCPX won’t let you remove a role if it’s assigned)
  2. Restart FCPX (Not 100% sure why we have to restart, something must happen on start up of FCPX)
  3. You should now be able to go in and use backspace/delete to the role.

This is the way i managed to do it above, let me know if anyone finds any other ways to do it.

Verified with Final Cut Pro X 10.0.5 and if the role is not being used in any clip, restarting will remove it automatically. Non need to open the Role Editor.

I’ve noticed if the role isn’t being used it will be deleted too, kinda annoying. Not sure if this is a bug or intentional by Apple.
