Top tools for Final Cut Pro X #2 – 7toX

This is the second in our series of highlighting some of the great tools avaliable for Apple’s Final Cut Pro X to either extend the functionaility or fill in some of the missing gaps.

This time around, the app we’re featuring is 7toX.

Introducing 7toX

When apple first released Final Cut Pro X, it decided to (and annoying alot of people at the same time) not include any kind of in built backwards compatability with Final Cut Pro 7, it’s legacy application. This basically meant that you couldn’t import any of your old projects into the new app. To cut a long story short though, with the 10.0.3 update to Final Cut Pro X the XML version was upgraded, this allowed for some fancy things, namely it allowed Intelligent Assistance to begin work on an app that would take a xml export of a Final Cut Pro 7 project and transfer it to the new FCPX format with it’s storylines, roles and compound clips.

The guys over at Intelligent Assistance have managed to do all the complicated and hard work and achieve a pretty good conversion from FCP7 to FCPX. The process for you the user, is pretty simple. You export your XML from Final Cut Pro 7, open 7toX, locate your file and let 7toX do the conversion, 7toX displays a progress bar during translation and, when completed, adds the new Event to the Event Library or opens the old sequence as a new project in FCPX. It’s as simple as that!

Want to download and try 7toX or want to find out more about the app, you can find out more at the 7toX website or download it from the Mac App Store
